Nelson Taylor is the Founder & Managing Partner of The Blackstone Team at COMPASS Real Estate based out of Providence. He’s been in the real estate business for 23 years, and not only is he a successful real estate broker in his own right (he recently sold the most expensive property in the history of the East Side), but he has also helped lead The Blackstone Team to become the #1 Team on the East Side and the #3 team statewide. Whether buying or selling, he’s passionate about helping his clients achieve their goals (at all price-points in the marketplace), but also helping younger agents on The Blackstone Team to achieve their highest potential.
Nelson has always been a pioneer in the real estate business. He started the first real estate team in Rhode Island, which has evolved over the decades into a unique model of collaboration, where every member has the opportunity to become a partner and share in the profits of the business. He also created the first (and perhaps still the only) retirement program for the team agents, which allows for monetization of the individual businesses that agents spend their careers developing. With the help of his partners, Nelson also created a scholarship and mentoring program for Black individuals interested in launching a career in real estate. The Blackstone Team is not just about offering the best customer service and sales savvy in the marketplace, but also about creating what we want out of the world.
Nelson lives on the East Side of Providence with his wife Kelly Taylor (a local interior designer) and they are the parents of two sons, Will (21), Reid (17) and their dog Jackson (9). Nelson and Kelly both love travel and exploring different cuisines. They make a priority out of regularly seeing live music (they’re annual attendees of the Newport Folk Festival). The also own a boat and spend as much time as possible fishing for stripers and cruising around Narragansett Bay. One of Nelson’s greatest passions is fly fishing, and he’s psyched that Kelly has recently taken up the sport and now their travel is often based around rivers. They recently explored the Catksills, fishing the Beaverkill, Willowemoc and East Branch rivers. Nelson and Kelly also spend a lot of their summers on Narragansett Bay, fishing and exploring in their 21-foot Key West center-console boat. Nelson learned to ski seriously while living in Jackson Hole, WY after undergraduate school. These days, Nelson and Kelly like to ski all around New England, but have a new interest in everything Hudson Valley, including ski mountains like Plattekill and Belleayre. Nelson lived in Jackson Hole, WY after undergraduate school.
In a former life, Nelson was a writer. Whether writing short stories or lyrics for bands, Nelson still corrals time to sit at his computer to see what comes out. Nelson wrote all of the lyrics for The Alstead’s album Songs of Lies, which can be found on Spotify. And believe it or not, Nelson also considers himself an amateur sleuth. At the onset of COVID, he and business partner Ben Kean embarked on trying to solve a 1984 Warwick cold case murder of Kathy Nicastro Luongo.
To Nelson, real estate is like short stories and songs. It’s real life—in all ways and shapes and forms. He loves to get to know his clients personally, not just their needs and desires. He takes great pride in helping people create financial stability through real estate, whether through a primary house or condo or via investment properties and vacation homes. Nelson considers himself more than just a real estate agent, but a consultant for life. He believes what he does professionally to be valuable. Homes are where the most intimate and special times of life are lived.
